Our Story

Interview with a student from Ashburton College, introducing Peni.

The first project was in 2021-22 to support a group of schools in their applications for Programme Approval and Provider Accreditation for the New Zealand Certificate in Foundation Skills Level 1 (version3). This qualification provides an alternative pathway to NCEA Level 2 (or further study or training at New Zealand Qualifications Level 2 or above) for Year 11 students. The primacy of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in the programme design and delivery of this qualification is fully acknowledged. The purpose of this qualification is to provide students with focused skills, capabilities, knowledge, and attributes needed to engage or re-engage with learning, so that they can continue learning and/or working in familiar, structured environments.

In 2023 a new suite of unit standards was developed and approved by NZQA and these are purpose built for this qualification. Any new applications will be based on these newly developed standards.

In 2021 we became an Approved Subject Association and in Sep 2022 we became an Incorporated Society. Ashburton College, Pukekohe High School and Papatoetoe High School are the first secondary schools in New Zealand to have programme accreditation. Liz Carrick, Karen Dobric and Esther Williams are now supporting other kura with programme approval whilst continuing to develop the programme and its resources.

A New Zealand First. Students from Ashburton College are the first Graduate with the NZ Certificate in Foundation Skills.
